Deathproof CrossFit - Columbus, Indiana
In response to the SARS 2 Coronavirus / COVID-19 crisis, Deathproof CrossFit Head Coach, Jase Robinson saw the need to provide services for his athletes which would allow them to continue to develop their fitness while applying principles of social distancing.
Gyms in Bartholomew County were forced to close their doors to the public pursuant to Indiana Code 16-20-1-24 on Friday, March 20th 2020.
The "Virusproof Fitness" program was implemented just 2 days later and provides 5 daily exercise routines with video demonstrations, mobility and flexibility routines, and macro-nutrient meal plans. Variations are provided for differing equipment levels owned, bodyweight routines and running-based workouts. Nutrition plans based on healthy whole foods are tailored for body composition, gender, age, and weight loss goals and include vegan, pescatarian and gluten-free options.
As the program started to gain momentum, Robinson recognized a broader need as seniors and those with lost income bore the brunt of the social distancing adjustments. "The people who need this the most, those most vulnerable to COVID-19, are the people with the fewest available resources during this time", noted Robinson.
That was enough to create a response.
"I constantly remind athletes working out in my gym that, in my opinion, the goal in life is to increase your capacities. Not only physical capacity, which is what you do with exercise, but also, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual capacities. Once those capacities are developed then you expend them in the service of your fellow men. That's the whole point of living!"
With that thought reaffirmed, Robinson set out to use his extensive experience and technical capabilities to create a free resource for use by those forced into isolation and the Deathproof CrossFit Seniors At-Home Program was born.
The program uses a library of exercise demonstrations created by CrossFit Inc. Daily exercise routines are delivered via the www.DeathproofCrossFit.com website using these movements, which can be easily performed at home with commonly available equipment such as chairs, couches, milk jugs and backpacks.
"The magic is in the movements", says Robinson. "They're functional, human, real-world movements with utility in everyday application. Every day you need to get up, lift and move objects, sit, stand and balance. These are the movements we should exercise with."
Routines last between 15 and 20 minutes and can be performed daily.
Robinson and his partner Dree Mcnear are no strangers to working with senior populations. They have run Rock Steady Boxing classes daily for the past 5 years which is a program specifically for "Fighters" with a Parkinson's disease diagnosis. McNear maintains that "exercise for seniors varies by degree not by type. Everyone needs to be able to lift, squat and get up from the ground".
The Deathproof CrossFit name is a testament to the effectiveness of these exercises. Robinson used this exercise system to rehabilitate himself after a near-fatal motorcycle wreck in 2015. Hence, the name Deathproof.
